Dial Up Internet Providers
The four categories of dial up Internet Providers. (Continued from previous page.)
Custom ISPs;
Examples: AOL, MSN, Earthlink
These are
Providers that offer access through custom software
developed by them. Typically, the entire internet
experience of the user is controlled through this
software. The browser and email program are specific
to this ISP, and in most cases is not compatible with
Windows based software. You cannot use another browser
or email program.
Pros
The design of this software is done with the
total newbie in mind. It is as user friendly as can be. All - but particularly AOL - have outstanding customer support, guiding the user in becoming familiar online.
The only computer expertise a person needs is running
the installation CD to set it up.
Typically, the first surfing experience for many people
is this type of internet service.
Cons
The monthly subscription price of such an ISP is over
$20.00.
Additionally - as mentioned - the subscriber cannot
use another email program or some other Internet
surfing feature.
Once they become more experienced and realize that there are other
reliable providers -
without the software limitations noted above - many
people switch over to other, less expensive companies.
Bottom Line:
If you are new to computers, then one of these - AOL especially - is a solid choice.
If you are not new online, then it boils down to whether you need the comfort level of being able to speak to live customer support. The value priced providers do NOT provide toll free customer support. If you need this, then AOL would be our recommendation.
If this isn't an issue, then the low priced ISPs would be best for you.
